Newport Beach, Orange County
Balboa Island was built up from a mudflat in Newport Harbor in the early 1900s and is now packed with cottages on narrow lots. A small car ferry has shuttled between the island and the Balboa Peninsula since 1919, a crossing of a few minutes. The Balboa Pavilion, a landmark of Newport Beach since 1906, stands at the far landing.
